Brick (DVD)

So I've been hearing nothing but good things about this movie. Its not a mainstream movie and was mainly a festival flick, I believe it did have a limited release in theaters, but nothing around here.

Its basically about a kid who's in love with this girl, but she has been missing for a few months, nobodies heard from her. It opens with the main character finding this girl dead. We then flashback 2 days when he gets a mysterious phone call from her saying she needs help. The next 2 days leading up to him finding her dead, are filled with twists and turns and totally random dialogue, but not necessarily in a bad way.

After hearing the hype and reading a few reviews I decided to pick this one up on DVD yesterday. I have a tendency to enjoy these smaller, non-theatrical box office hits, more than I like the blockbusters. Mainly because they are made for the film makers, not to please the fans. 11:14 is a great example, check out that movie if you can. Its similar to Crash, but doesnt deal with the racial overtones as much. Anyways, back to Brick. The first 15 minutes pulled me straight into this movie. I was really pissed when I had to leave and go out to dinner then softball and couldn't get to watch the rest till later. The dialogue is not your typical, straight forward dialogue that you hear in most high school teenage movies. The characters talked around in circles alot, using random words that didn't seem to fit with their appearances, but it works. The story itself was very captivating. The main character is played by that guy from 3rd Rock from the Sun, 10 Things I Hate About you, and about a million other things. The dead girl is played by "Claire" from Lost. Both characters really brought a sense of feeling to the movie. I dont really know what else to say, other than this is a really good movie, a bit confusing at times with how everything plays out. And the dialogue doesn't help, but you figure it all out in the end in "plain" english. So if you enjoy these smaller budgeted, independent films and are a fan of mysteries and weird shit, check it out. But I don't recommend it for everyone, there are going to be a lot of people that think its pure crap, but give it a chance, it truely is a great movie.

I think it was at the crap theater in Highland Park and the Art theater in Evanston. But I heard it was good too. I would have thought since it wasn't a horror flick or an Asian Horror flick or Tartan you would've avoided it.

Have you seen Infernal Affairs? Watch it before the shit American version comes out. I swear Scorsese is gay for Dicaprio.
