The Descent (UK DVD)
Ill try to keep it spoiler free as much as I can, but there might be some small ones. I'll only reveal as much as the trailers have revealed (hopefully)
One of the greatest horror/thriller movies I have seen in a long, long time. The movie revolves around a group of women thrill seekers that are looking for a new challenge. After conquering eveything else, they decide to give Spelunking a try (cave exploring). So they venture into this cave and start crawlin around. If your claustraphobic I could see this making you uncomfortable. Im not claustraphobic at all and some of the situations and areas they were squeezing through made me a little uncomfortable. So after awhile theres a small cave in, obviously, and their only way back out is blocked off. Time to find another way.... although it doesnt turn out to be that easy. Apparently there are "humanoid" creatures that have adapted to live in the darkness, dwelling in this particular cave. And yes, they are fucking creepy as hell. Thats about all I'll give away as far as plot goes. As far as the movie itself, cool and creepy as hell. I can't remember a recent movie that has given me chills as much as this one has. I love horror movies so I go check out most of them and this one by far does the best job of setting an eerie atmosphere and delivering the scares. Oh yeah, did I mention theres a shit ton of blood.... cause there is. The combination of blood, darkness and mystery is absolutely perfect in this movie. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone that enjoys horror movies and hasn't seen a good original one in a while. Its directed by the same guy that directed Dog Soldiers, which I have yet to check out, but after seeing a few screenshots, I might hafta pick it up this weekend. My only gripe with the US release of the movie is that there is talk that they removed a bit of the blood/gore and they changed the ending. If you've watched the region 2 version (UK) with the original ending, you'll be able to figure out exactly where they cut it for the US release. Its not really "changed" as far as re-shoots go, but they ended it sooner for the US release. |
