HOSTEL Part II
Let me start off by saying I enjoyed the first HOSTEL. I thought it was an interesting idea and Eli Roth put together a pretty decent film. But that's not to say it didn't have its flaws.
And now we have HOSTEL part II. It picks up right where the 1st one left off. The dude is on the train after killing the guy that tortured his friend, he's still missing his fingers and he's passed out. blah blah blah, don't want to give anything away so we'll just leave the intro at that. The real storyline in part II follows 3 american girls as they are backpacking through Europe. The storyline is basically the same as the first except with these girls. They get talked into going to slovakia to check out these amazing hot water springs, then end up at the HOSTEL and eventually kidnapped to be sold to the highest bidder. Unlike the first film, we get to see a bit more into the minds of the people that are paying for this service. 2 business men from america head out to slovakia to take part in this exclusive club and we are there with them from beginning to end. This was probably the most interesting part of the movie, getting to actually see what kind of people are paying to kill someone. If you took out these 2 guys, or at least their backstories, the movie would have been identical to the first one. Honestly it got a little boring after awhile. If you thought the first one took awhile to get going, the 2nd one is even longer. The first girl gets kidnapped with about 30 minutes left in the film and she is tortured/killed for about 5 minutes and then we go back to the normal story. Honestly, nothing really happens until the last 15 minutes of the movie. But those last 15 minutes were pretty intense, minus the very very end. Personally i didnt like how it ended. I read all these interviews with Eli Roth saying that it was the most shocking ending anyones ever seen in a horror movie, and yeah it was a little crazy and kinda "wow, i didnt know they could even show that kinda shit" I didn't find it as shocking as i was lead to believe. I almost found the end as kind of a cop out, i dont know why. I honestly can't tell you how I would have ended it differently, but there was just something about the ending that felt cheap to me. Overall, if you enjoyed the first one this might be worth checking out. I think the first one was a lot more graphic and violent, but this one gave us a little incite into the people that are paying to do this shit, which was pretty interesting. I still like Eli Roth as a film maker and can't wait for his adaptation of Stephen King's CELL (one of the few books I've actually read) and possibly Thanksgiving, which would be about 50 minutes long and part of Grindhouse 2. |
