Pirates of the Carribean: At Worlds End
There are going to be some spoilers in here, so if you haven't seen it do not read. I will probably give away the ending at some point.
I'll keep this review fairly short and to the point. I really don't see why people got confused by the movie. There were a few minor plot "holes" i guess you could call them but nothing to really make the movie confusing at all. The story picks up shortly after Dead Man's Chest ends and the crew along with captain Barbosa need to bring Jack Sparrow back from Davey Jone's Locker (land of the dead) in order to take down the Flying Dutchman, or more importantly, Davey Jones. They need Sparrow because he's one of the pirate lords that is needed to unbind the goddess Calypso, which they think will help them take out Jones. Obviously when they finally free her from her human form, she's not very happy with anyone and decides to whip up a ridiculously cool malestrom to hopefully take down both sides. So everyone seems to have different motives in this movie. Sparrow wants to sail the seas forever on the flying dutchman, will turner wants to save his father, davey jones and the english dude just want to kill everyone and control the seas or whatever. In the end, not everyone gets what they want. Here come some huge spoilers. As we learned in Dead Man's Chest, the only way to kill Davey Jones is to stab his still beating heart, but in doing so you become the Captain of the Flying Dutchman and are bound to the ship. You are then in charge of ferrying the souls of those who died at sea to the otherside. If you do not fulfill these duties, you are cursed (for lack of a better word). This is why Davey Jones and his crew look as they do. So in the final sequence Sparrow has control of Davey Jones' heart and is ready to stab it and sail the seas for eternity, when of course Davey Jones stabs Will Turner. Realizing the pain this is going to cause Elizabeth, Sparrow takes Will's hand and stabs the heart. Because of this Davey Jones is dead, but to finish the process the crew must cut out Will Turner's heart and place it in the chest. So Will is then alive as the new Captain of the Flying Dutchman and his father is no longer bound to the ship, even though he chooses to stay with his son in the end. So then every 10 years Will is allowed to step on land as part of his deal for guiding souls, just as Davey Jones was. These scenes I think people may have been confused by were the scenes in Davey Jones' locker, maybe? I dont know what was so confusing. Obviously Jack is in the land of the dead and going crazy so he starts to hallucinate. He hallucinates the whole movie as well, hence him talking to himself, etc.... not that confusing. The only thing I may have been confused on a little bit is why Barbosa and Sparrow are pirate lords or part of that circle of pirates. Barbosa was the original Captain of the black pearl, so I understand why he would have a piece of "8" at the gathering of pirates, but Sparrow only became captain after the crew rose up in mutiny and took over the ship right? So Sparrow wouldn't have been at that original meeting of the pirate lords, would he? I could be forgetting something from the first movie, it's been a little while, maybe ill watch it this week again. But you can easily overlook this and understand the rest of the movie no problem. So what was so confusing to people? Last edited by MaK10 : 06-06-2007 at 09:16 AM. |
