Planet Terror
Planet Terror is a film where it gets right into the story with the characters. It doesn't take them a half hour to get to the point and thats what I love about films. You may have seen this on myspace or youtube but at the beginning of the film you see the smokin hot Rose McGowan doing a lap dance. There is no action in that scene whatsoever but this is a girl who does not go naked. After she quits her job as a go-go dancer and goes to a bar that just re-opended. There she meets El Wray and (stupid) Fergie. But she meets (stupid) Fergie outside. Luckily Fergie gets killed a few minutes later . Back to the bar, El Wray and Cherry have a talk about their jobs for somewhat reason. After Cherry gets a ride home from El Wray. But since Fergie gets attacked by zomibes in the road the truck crashes and Cherry loses her leg. Now what I don't like about that is she doesn't get the gun in her leg until the last half hour in the film. She had a stick in her leg but she stabbed Quentin Tarantino (Rapist #1) in the eye which caused him to try to shit on her. But when she gets the gun in her leg she and El go on the motorcycle out the door killing zombies. WARNING THIS NEXT SENTENCE IS A SPOILER. Sadly El Wray dies from a zombie so all that is left is Cherry, Dakota and some other dude, oh I forgot to tell you Doc dies earlier in the film. So for the last minute you see Cherry, Dakota, and some other guy are on camels looking for shelter. I didn't expect this but in the last 5 seconds you see a baby strapped to Cherry's back.In all I give Planet Terror a 4.9/5 Death Proof Death Proof is a film where you get bored very easily. The girls don't meet Kurt Russel until about a half hour into the film. They just talk about Jungle Julia. In the film whenever you do see Kurt Russel you wait for him to get into the boring ass discussion. But he just stands there. There were few exciting scenes in this film. As you have seen on IGN.com Zoe is on the car front hanging on for her life. It's more exciting on the internet but in the theater its not that hype. I won't give away if she dies or not. WARNING THIS NEXT SENTENCE IS A SPOILER. But Stuntman Mike dies, the ladies start kicking his Stuntman ass! The Death Proof review is short because I was so bored I went to the bathroom alot of times. In all I give Death Proof a 2.5/5 [BStay for Planet Terror, leave for Death Proof.[/b]

Wow, ok im pissed.. I just wrote a huge review of the movie to post below this and accidently clicked off the edit window and hit backspace, which is like hitting the back button the browser and it all erased... FUCK im pissed, so here is an abridged version, maybe ill write it all again later.
PLANET TERROR Robert Rodriguez's part of the experience is a "zombie" filled mess, and i mean mess in a good way, as in body parts exploding and flying everywhere, shit getting blown up with one gunshot, and hot chicks all over the place. Despite the fact that Fergie was trying to act, she did look hot as fuck. So as far as the movie goes i like to compare it to sort of a Desperado meets From Dusk Till Dawn, if i had to use past Rodriguez movies. It's not technically a zombie movie because the people don't die and then come back, they are exposed to some toxic gas that turns them into "zombies". Sort of like 28 Days Later and Resident Evil, although you could argue that the virus in Resident Evil killed the people first, but it was a shitty movie either way no need to argue. So anyways, Planet Terror takes after the blood and guts, over the top action Grindhouse style, which is only one style that is considered Grindhouse. DEATH PROOF Death Proof attacks a different side of Grindhouse. The Grindhouse flicks don't need to have any blood and guts in them to be considered "Grindhouse". Death Proof takes more of the powerful women, slasher, road racing movies of Grindhouse and uses those as inspiration. It is definitely more dialogue driven than Planet Terror; 1 because its Tarantino and if you've seen any of his other movies you know they are heavily based on dialgue. And the guy is damn good at writing dialogue. And 2 because there isn't as much action in the movie because it's not that take on the "genre". Basically Stuntman Mike stalks chicks and kills them using his stunt car. Nothing special about the car except that it is extremely reinforced in the drivers area to withstand horrible accidents, like a real stuntcar would be. The beginning does drag a bit, but the dialogue is very well written and leads up to an extremely cool car scene at the end. Zoe does an amazing job on the hood of that car. There's even a throwback to Resevoir Dogs with the scene in the coffee shop, good shit. Overall I liked them both, Planet Terror maybe a little more just cause it had alot more action. Personally I think they should have swapped the showing order and shown Death Proof first and finished it off with a non-stop action flick in Planet Terror, but that's just me. Now for the fake trailers. Before Planet Terror even starts we get to see Rodriguez's fake trailer for "Machette" which is fucking crazy. Supposedly they shot about 30 minutes of footage for the trailer and are planning to shoot some more and release the movie straight to DVD which would be cool as hell, so keep an eye out for that. In between the 2 features we get 3 more trailers. Rob Zombie's "Werewolf Women of the SS", Edgar Wright's "Don't" and Eli Roth's "Thanksgiving". "Thanksgiving" was easily the most entertaining of the 3. I'm not going to give away any details for any of them. You can watch Thanksgiving online, i posted a link in another thread in the movie section. The idea behind this movie/double feature is incredible, I love it. Personally i had no problem sitting through it for 3 hours, but apparently alot of the general public did (based on box office numbers). And it's not really a genre that a lot of people enjoy. I think it'll do well on DVD which is really where all the money comes from these days so hopefully they will continue experimenting with this idea. Possibly releasing future grindhouse movies as 2 seperate movies, or a double feature if thats what you want. That way people can see 1 if they want to, or both to get the full experience. And the fake trailer idea was amazing, those could be stand alone movies and pull a profit I think.... even if they were straight to DVD i'd definitely buy them. Eli Roth's Thanksgiving on youtube Robert Rodriguez's Machete Rob Zombie's Werewolf Women of the SS Edgar Wright's Don't Last edited by MaK10 : 04-25-2007 at 04:29 PM. |
