Directors Cut Or No? Am I way Off Here?
Hello all, glad to be among the company of people who think Cloverfield was a masterpiece...Or at least care enough to keep reading here and be part of this...
Lemme first start off by saying, I am a movie buff...and when I rank me first few movies....I STILL put The Blair Witch Project as my Number one. I was at the Chicago premere of it at Piper's Alley 2 weeks before the official date. No one ever agrees with my assesment, and I hear groans among discussions I have. I am firm in my resolve. I got into the hype of it, all the internet stuff, and saw it and loved it....I can tell you I had such great fear at the end while Heather was screaming my nose was running. I have never had fear like that and I had to close my eyes. IMHO, a movie that moves you like that, deserves it's place. That's not what this post is about, so DON'T be opinionated about that...Please....Just hear me out here... After Blair Witch, and it made SO MUCH money, I wondered how come no one ever did anything like that....Then I started seeing previews for Cloverfield...And I knew someone was following the pattern there....Exploring something that no one explored in 10 years to make a crapload of money, and that was made so long ago it would seem like a new concept, thus, seemingly setting a precedent which was already set which topped the charts....And thats the fact, Cloverfield did it again. Now here is my thing, and I dunno if it has been explored and discussed here on this forum, but I have paid close attention and I havent seen it....But If I missed it please forgive me, Im just trying to get an answer.... http://www.newcougar.org/forums/loun...ield-plot.html This cut and pasted review of the movie, I read about 2 weeks before showtime, (not on that forum but the original post), and I had an idea to what I thought it would be. I do remember the original website said...or the guy who wrote it said....He was a Paramount screener, and I also remember he would not say who he was...But I went in with the opinion that this was the movie, and I had no problem knowing so because of how excited I was about this project known as Cloverfield...I went in knowing, and ultimately excited....But I left shaking my head thinking...How could that be? It was completely different than what I had read....The movie I saw was not even close to what I had read it would be from the current release of the film.... Now I dunno if that was pre or post Spielberg viewing, but you have to admit, the movie was dramatically different....Don't get me wrong...I still loved it, bigtime...Enough to see it six nights in a row, and 11 times total... So what I am saying is...Doesn't it make more sense, if you are doing all of this bullstein on the internet, among five or six or seven sites for some unknown reason....And you better realize it's more that to sell the DVD release....That you actually release that version or footage now on the DVD release....To get more people into it, and following those websites that you are stressing more closely so that the average person is aware of them, rather than just us who are desperately following every tidbit that you are releasing to us? It makes more sense this way...you would have more now with doing that.....I dunno, do I have blinders on for some reason? Am I wrong?? I assumed that the "extra stuff" that Best Buy was including was the footage missing from the movie to which I had read about in that post that we had missed while seeing the movie... I was wrong, I guess... That cut of the movie seems non-existant. Well, am I wrong in saying if I didn't read that review, and just saw the movie...I'd have no idea what Slusho.jp was...or what was happening now on the internet with all of these sites? Or for that matter any of the other tricks Paramount is trying to play now for whatever reason they are doing it...Trying to sell DVD's or getting ready for the sequel? I got news...For those who are questioning a sequel.....Wikipedia claims a worldwide pre-DVD release gross of 160 MILLION dollars....It cost between 8-9 million to film if Im not wrong? Whats that profit percentage? And oh yeah that's not even DVD sales...not only here in the states....but world-wide. So if you think they don't have SEQUEL written all over that, you better re-asses. Those are true numbers, and you better realize..... ;> So why don't we have that cut on the DVD? Wouldn't that be a Director's Cut of the movie? Or you think it could be released later? Like with The Blair Witch, I have the hype now....Seems like their internet campaign weather it be for the DVD or the sequel, would be best served with that cut of the movie for people to see.... Thats my take...Take it or leave it. Richard "ABK" Storm Last edited by ABKStorm : 04-23-2008 at 05:11 AM. Reason: cuz I can and should |

The review you read was 100% fake, that's why it's not like the movie you saw. There were tons of people putting out fake reviews before the movie came out based on random stuff we already knew.
I don't think you'll see a directors cut, since I don't believe there was that much extra footage shot. Hopefully though, we'll see a blu-ray version sooner than later. And as for how much money the movie made, I don't know if your $160 million number is right or wrong, but the movie itself cost $25 million to make, not sure if that included the marketing budget or not, im guessing not. Either way, the movie was very successful and profitable. And the purpose of the sites hidden around the internet were to provide a little bit of a back story to those that were interested, and to get people talking about the movie. Obviously you didn't need to know any of the internet stuff before going into the movie, which they did on purpose. If you needed to follow all the internet stuff to understand what was happening, it would turn people away. The people that followed all the stuff online was just a fraction of the amount of people that saw it in theaters.

First of all, let me say thank you MaK10 for clearing up my issues with CloverField for me....It's VERY cool that the owner of the board takes so much care to what's posted here....And I not only say that from my post, but I see it all along this message board....
Let me also say I am not one to join boards like this, I usually sit silent and just read along and such and I am happy with that... But, CloverField moved me so much that I thought it might be fun to join in the discussion.....I guess I was wrong.... I made an honest post about what I am thinking, and besides the owner....All I do is get ripped for expressing myself..... Well for those of you who had nothing nice to say...I say thanks....This is why I don't join and particiapte....I am sorry I wasted your's time with my post, and I am sorry you had to waste your time with a reply. I will not waste your time with this anymore. Be well. Richard "ABK" Storm Last edited by ABKStorm : 04-28-2008 at 03:31 PM. |
