I actually dont find the monster extremely mysterious. It is probably a freak growth, and maybe something in those crab bites made it bigger. Like, slowly over time, all that poison shit couldn't kill it, but it kept growing. All we know is that it was underwater for a loooong time, that's all that we truly need to know.
Still, it seems like the stuff in their bite directly targets your insides, causing a burst from the chest, so that probably isn't the case. |

tbh falcon i don't believe this is a freak growth. i actualy think this creatrure has been alive for millions of years. its main habitate is underwater which is why we have found no trace of the creature (talking from a movie perspective here) but is able to freely roam from land to sea. seeing as this creature most likly had no natural predators the only real thing this could die of is old age or diese. and if that happens then wouldn't it have some sort of place to go when it wants to die? kinda like how whales beach themselves when they want to die?

Explosion Source
It seems to me the source f the first major explosion is explained when Hud takes a shot from the Brooklyn Bridge of what looks like a destroyed LNG tanker that is still burning...not that there should be tankers next to downtown NYC, but I've seen them dock right near downtown Boston (where there is now, since 9/11, much public concern of the LNG site that could theoretically level much of Boston if it were set off just right) so maybe it's not outlandish. Smashing one of those is certainly going to create a huge fuel air blast, probably sending all sort of elements containing more liquified gas which may explain why the pieces apear to erupt while in flight. Anything that can survive a massive blast like that can probably only be destroyed from the inside out. I mapped out some of the locations of things and it seemed to make sense. Then a minute or two later the Liberty head was tossed from about the same location, past the Woolworth building up to the location of the apartment "one block from Centre street". Then the monster comes ashore downtown and takes down the Woolworth building then heads up to the village to eat young hipsters. The details are still confusing though. The best clue I could find for the location of the party was when they argue about which bridge to take and one the guys say's something like "it's one block to Centre street", but in the making of the movie on the DVD, one of the film staff indicates it was on Orchard st, which seems too far away to provide a view of the Woolworth building and is much more than a block to Centre st. Also, the monster must move very fast. In the helicopter sequence, it moved from grand central to 9th and 58th (where it falls into the Avon building after being bombed by the B2) in a matter of maybe a minute or two, which clocks in somewhere between 30 and 60 mph. Not to mention it motored up to Columbus Circle to knock over Beth's building and made it back to the Brooklyn Bridge within maybe 30 minutes. Interesting movie..it's a fun project trying to figure it out. As for killing the monster, I'd try hitting it with bunker busters, or somehow trick it into eating a big plate of remote controlled c4 or thermite munitions. Also, I don't know how Rob or Beth could possibly survive the blasts at the end. Hammerdown would presumably mean thermobaric weapons, which would probably kill any human in central park either by sheer overpressure concussion or asphyxiation. You could potentially survive carpet bombing under a bridge, but clearly 500-1000 pounders don't do much to huge monsters aside from knock it around a bit. Did anyone else notice any damage to the monster at all? Clearly it seemed to feel pain. I thought you could see a bit of a cleft on it's right shoulder when it ate Hud.

the locations in the movie are messed up. the explosion is ment to be the tanker yes i do believe that but i think that where they place the explosion (between loads of buildings) was only there for effect. its not ment to be geologicly correct. films do it all the time. also trying to work out where they live and had the party is pointless as am prity sure they were filmed in 2 completly different locations.

I agree, the locations are approximate, but not realistic, at least not so far as I can see. Seemed like a lot of care was put into the film to show a timeline and path, but it's probably the case that the practical reality of events was given up for better looking shots. For example, the group passes Grand st. on the move to the Boorklyn bridge, which assuming they took Centre street as exclaimed would put the group closer to the Manhattan bridge. I still wish that the intentional details like street names and clock times added up better. As for the explosion coming from downtown, I'd think the oil from the tanker would have spilled out into downtown, creating a large vapor cloud and the means for an explosion in the city. If the news of the oil tanker capsizing was not live, the earthquake could have been the tanker being tossed ashore. Some similar event would be needed to create an earthquake and sever major powerlines. Plus I think a large explosion would require that the fuel have time, a few minutes, to spread out in order to create a large enough vapor cloud. Any thoughts on that?

i think everything like the powercut and explosion was just to make the viewer and characters know omethign has happened. i don't think the director or jj even knows what caused the powercut and earthquake |
